Contactless payments have become the standard for speed, convenience, and efficiency. But as with every technological advancement in financial services, innovation attracts new forms of criminal exploitation. Attackers are no longer limited to skimming devices or card cloning — they are now turning to sophisticated methods such as *Ghost Tap* and other NFC and EMV relay attacks, which exploit the very protocols designed to keep transactions secure.

Ghost Tap, sometimes called “phantom tapping,” allows fraudsters to trick a payment terminal into believing a legitimate card is present, when in fact the transaction is being relayed from a stolen credential, a remote device, or even a compromised smartphone. Relay attacks on EMV and NFC take this a step further: criminals extend the communication between the card and the terminal across large distances, bypassing physical safeguards and enabling fraudulent purchases in real time.
