Policy writing has a reputation: dense, vague, and just ambiguous enough to make lawyers argue about what it really means. It doesn’t have to be that way.
In “How to Write Good Policy (And Not Cuss Under Your Breath Too Much)”, we’ll take a practical (and slightly irreverent) look at how to write policy that actually says what you think it says. Because the goal isn’t to write policy that sounds good; it’s to write policy that means something clear, enforceable, and difficult to misinterpret.
This session will walk through how vague verbs, squishy qualifiers, and hopeful phrasing quietly sabotage otherwise well-intentioned policies. We’ll talk about how to spot language that leaves room for confusion, how to replace it with clear expectations, and how to structure policy so people understand what’s required, what’s allowed, and what’s not up for debate. And you're allowed to cuss, in fact, we emphatically encourage it.
