Follow the Funds: Spotting Scammers in Wallet-Based Payments

Where the Money Flows, Risk Follows
We’ll walk through how funds move in Cash App Pay and pinpoint where scammer activity typically surfaces. Visualizing the flow helps acquirers and ISOs understand where they’re vulnerable—and what questions to ask.

Inside the Scammer Playbook
Scammers are getting creative—using fake businesses, synthetic identities, and collusion to slip through onboarding and processing gaps. We’ll share real tactics and how they show up in merchant behavior.

Early Signals, Smarter Defenses
You don’t need direct access to wallet data to fight fraud. This session will cover key signals—like onboarding inconsistencies, usage patterns, and refund abuse—that acquirers and ISOs can use to flag high-risk merchants faster.

Speaker:
Yuliya Kazakevich, Global Head of Merchant Risk & Onboarding, CashApp

10:00 AM - 10:15 AM

 Donut Break

APP was started 27 years ago with the founders gathering around coffee and donuts to collaborate on common challenges and fraud trends. We keep the tradition alive at every event with donuts for all!

MATCH Pro Updates & Legal Ramifications

MATCH Pro has changed acquirers' obligations to MATCH-listed merchants. Meanwhile, processors, banks, and even card networks have faced increased litigation pressure for placing merchants on MATCH. In this session, Ed Marshall and Jennifer Maddux will explore the shifting landscapes to support defensible MATCH-related policies.

Building digital trust by combating scams and fraudulent merchants

Fraud may go unseen; its impact does not.

As digital commerce grows, so do the opportunities for bad actors to exploit consumers and merchants alike. Fraudulent merchants are infiltrating the payments ecosystem, using deceptive tactics to scam buyers, damage business reputations, and exploit payment systems. According to recent industry insights, these activities are among the most rapidly growing threats in the payments ecosystem.

Mastercard is taking action. We’re advancing fraud detection technologies, partnering with industry leaders, and strengthening oversight to help protect consumers, businesses, and the integrity of the digital economy. Together, we’re building a safer digital marketplace where trust can thrive.
